What hair extensions are?

They can be attached in several ways, including through clips, tape, fusion (bonding), or sewn in. People use hair extensions to achieve a fuller, longer, or more styled look without waiting for their hair to grow naturally. They come in various types and qualities, including human hair (which can be styled with heat) and synthetic hair (which typically cannot be styled with heat).

What is Remy hair?

Remy hair refers to high-quality human hair where the cuticles (the protective outer layer of each strand) are kept intact and aligned in the same direction. This helps the hair look more natural, shiny, and smooth because the strands are not tangled or prone to frizz. Remy hair is considered one of the best types of hair used for extensions because it behaves similarly to natural hair, allowing it to be styled with heat, dyed, and treated like your own hair. Since the cuticles are intact, it also lasts longer than non-Remy hair, making it a popular choice for extensions.

Can hair extensions cause damage to your hair?

High- quality hair extensions, when applied correctly and with care, will not damage your natural hair. Using the right tools and following proper techniques , along with regular maintenance at home, ensures your natural hair can grow healthier and strong without breakage. We’ve successfully used hair extensions to help clients restore hair after chemotherapy or chemical/color damage. Our focus is always on selecting products that  prioritize the health of your hair.

Damage can occur if hair extensions are not customized to your specific needs or if the hair quality is not suitable for healthy growth. This can happen when:

• The extensions are too heavy, thick, or tight.
• The hair does not have enough volume to support the weight of improperly-sized attachments, which can pull the hair out from the follicle.
• The strands are pulled too tightly, leading to breakage beneath the wrong bonding material.
• The attachment isn’t sealed securely or if adhesive was not properly removed before applying new adhesive, which can cause mold growth beneath the bond.

Is it possible to apply hair extensions to post-chemotherapy hair?

Absolutely, hair extensions can be used on post- chemotherapy hair. Certain extensions methods work wonderfully for helping to manage and grow out hair after chemotherapy, as long as the new hair growth is at least 1.5 to 2 inches long.  

Is every method of hair extension application safe to use?

Not all hair extension application methods are completely risk-free. The safety of hair extensions depends on factors such as the method used, the quality of the extensions, proper application, and maintenance. To ensure safety, it’s important to have extensions applied by a professional and follow proper maintenance routines

What are the most frequently used hair extension methods?

The most frequently used hair extension methods include:

1. Clip-In Extensions – Temporary extensions that can be clipped in and removed easily. (not recommended for a daily use) 
2. Tape-In Extensions – Pre-taped wefts attached to the natural hair using adhesive.
3. Sew-In (Weave) Extensions – Hair is braided into cornrows, and extensions are sewn in with a needle and thread.
4. Fusion (Keratin Bond) Extensions – Strands are bonded to natural hair using heat and keratin glue.
5. Micro Link (Bead) Extensions – Small sections of hair are attached using tiny beads or rings without heat or glue.
6. Halo Extensions – A single weft of hair attached to a thin wire, worn like a headband.

Each method varies in longevity, maintenance, and suitability based on hair type and lifestyle. 

Are all hair extension application methods safe?

Can I style my extensions with heat tools?

YES! Of course, you can treat the extensions like your natural hair and use any type of heat styling tool. You can blow-dry your hair with a brush, use a flat iron or curling iron, always remembering to use a heat protectant to ensure the integrity of both your hair and the extensions.

Is there a special comb or brush for extensions?

It could be said that there is a special brush. What makes this brush special? It doesn’t have balls at the end of the bristles.

Can I wash my hair with extensions as often as I wash my natural hair?

It is recommended to wash your hair every two to four days, or when it feels dirty or greasy. After applying extensions, you should wait at least two days before washing your hair.

Is it recommended to use hair masks or intensive conditioning treatments on my extensions?

Yes, it is recommended, from mid-length to ends, avoiding the roots. Conditioners and hair masks can damage the attachment of the hair extensions when they come into contact with it.

I worked out a lot, can i use hair extensions (Training, swim, sports, etc)?

Of course, you can do any type of exercise or sport while wearing hair extensions, as long as you follow the instructions and recommendations to care for them. For example: make sure to brush your hair and tie it up before any physical activity. If you sweat a lot, you can use dry shampoo and blow-dry it, or wash it to prevent the extensions from slipping due to sweat and scalp oils.

What are the recommendations for coloring hair with extensions?

Of course, you can have your hair professionally colored before or after an extension application. However, it’s not recommended to dye your hair at home, as box dye can damage the keratin or adhesive of the extensions.

Do hair extensions experience any shedding?

Yes, it’s normal — just like natural hair sheds, the same can happen with extensions.

Are there curly and wavy hair extensions?

Yes! Textured extensions do exist, and they come in a variety of colors. This type of extension is fantastic for adding volume to textured hair — no one will notice you’re wearing extensions, as they blend perfectly with different hair textures.

How long can I expect my extensions to last?

Extensions can last anywhere from 6 to 16 weeks. This will depend on the method used and other factors such as how oily your hair is, how well you maintain it at home, how much you sweat during exercise, and so on.

What is the minimum hair length required to apply hair extensions?

The hair should be at least approximately 2 inches long, or long enough to cover the K-tip or tape.

Is it safe to style my hair in a ponytail or bun with extensions?

Yes, you can style your hair however you like. If the extensions have been applied correctly, you’ll be able to tie your hair back without them being noticeable.

Can clients purchase extensions directly from the salon?

The only extensions that can be purchased are clip-in extensions, some hair pieces, and halos. The other methods offered at L’Extensioniste are customized. Keep in mind that the salon does not keep an inventory of extensions.

What’s the proper way to remove hair extensions at home?

There is no safe way to remove extensions at home. The only safe method is to have them removed by a hair extension specialist. You can schedule an appointment to have your extensions removed, even if they were applied at another salon.

How long should I expect the extension service to last?

The time varies depending on the method used during your appointment, the amount of hair needed to achieve the desired look — whether it’s just adding volume or adding length as well — and the density of your hair. As an estimate based on the fastest method, appointments can range from 3 to 8 hours. In some cases, such as reconstruction or post-chemotherapy, appointments may take even longer.

How much does a hair extension application typically cost?
